How to Make The Most of Your Summer

For those of us on the east coast, there is about a month left until we are back in session for school. With the impending date of our loss of freedom creeping up, the inevitable feeling of panic begins to set in as you realize you haven’t done even half of the things you said you would this summer. If you’ve spent a large part of your summer up until now binge-watching Netflix, it’s time to press pause and step into reality.


  1. Start waking up earlier

Getting a normal amount of sleep (7-9 hours) and being up before noon will help you to get a jumpstart on your day and be more productive all day long. It’ll also make things easier when you have to wake up before the sun again (sob.) Even for someone who is not a morning person (I only speak in grunts for the first 20 minutes I’m awake,) this really makes a difference. When I sleep past 10 am, I don’t get anything done. Anywhere from 7:30-9:30 is perfect for me.

2. Go outside!

If there are any parks, lakes, or mountains near you, get out there! Spend a few hours walking and breathing fresh air without checking your phone, and you will feel a million times better. Just don’t go in the middle of the day when it’s literally 100 degrees because you might melt (true fact.) Your body and your soul will thank you, so get outdoors!

3. Seek out volunteer work

Sure, not everyone wants to spend his or her summer doing work for free, but not all volunteer work is necessarily work. Find something you enjoy doing. Volunteer at your local library if you love books, spend some time with senior citizens, help a little kid with their reading schools, or help out in your community if there’s something that you can participate in.

4. Try a new coffee shop/cafe

I absolutely LOVE coffee, and just about everything else they usually sell at coffee shops. They’re often a great place to get some work done, read a book, journal, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee while instagramming the cute setup. This is my favorite thing to do. I have a regular coffee shop that I visit, and just spending some time there helps to get me going and relaxes me. Google cute coffee shops/cafes near you, or ask friends for recommendations. You just might find your new go-to spot.

4. Get a new book

Or finally open the one that’s been on your shelf for months (years?) and accomplish something! Reading is so good for your brain and so many people don’t find time to read during the school year, so take advantage of the time you have now. Just because you’re not in school doesn’t mean you shouldn’t nourish your brain.

5. Go for a long drive to some place new

Not everyone has the funds, time, or opportunity to go on a tumblr worthy cross-country road trip, but mini ones can still be fun without the commitment or expenses of a long one. Drive to a nearby city or attraction with friends or a significant other. Awaken your spirit of adventure!

6. Throw away all your crap

Summer is the best time to clear out everything that gets in your way during the school year but you have no time to deal with. Throw away all the random papers and packages and old items you don’t use anymore. Clearing out all the useless stuff makes it so much easier to see what you have and to organize it all. Cleaning your space and keeping it clean becomes a lot less daunting when you have less stuff, and it makes it so much easier to relax and breathe.

7. Plan a getaway

Whether it’s a one night camping trip for under $50, or a week long beach getaway with friends or family, getting away from your everyday surrounding can refresh your brain and spirit and not only supply some fun and adventure, but help you kick start things when you come back feeling rejuvenated!
